“She dived into the forest, as she always did. Contemplating the plants and their geometry. Mesmerized by soft music playing nearby, she failed to notice a warning nailed to a tree and continued to go deeper and deeper into the thicket she thought she knew well.
She discovered wondrous plants that she couldn't help but draw. However, as she drew, she began to feel funny. It was getting dark, and there were no birds to tell her the time. She let herself be lured by a sweet scent that led her to a strange corner full of beautiful red and luminescent mushrooms.
While keeping her eyes on them, for the first time in her life, she felt as if the mushrooms were addressing her in a soft whisper. She moved closer to speak back to them, and when she was close enough, she felt them exchange breath. They were responding to each other.
Lying on the ground, she began to shake. The luminescent fungi slowly spread their spores inside her until they consumed her completely."
“Se sumergió en el bosque como siempre hacía. Contempló las plantas y su geometría. Hipnotizada por una suave música, no se percató de una advertencia clavada en un árbol y siguió adentrándose cada vez más en esa espesura que creía conocer.
Descubrió plantas asombrosas que no pudo evitar dibujar. Sin embargo, mientras lo hacía, empezó a sentirse extraña. Estaba oscureciendo y no había pájaros a quienes preguntarles la hora. Se dejó llevar por un olor dulzón que la guió hasta un extraño rincón lleno de hermosos hongos rojos y luminiscentes.
Sin dejar de mirarlos, por primera vez en su vida sentía como si los hongos se dirigieran a ella en un suave susurro. Se acercó para hablarles de vuelta y, cuando estuvo lo suficientemente cerca, sintió cómo intercambiaban el aliento. Se respondían.
Tirada sobre el piso, comenzó a agitarse. Lentamente, los hongos luminiscentes esparcieron sus esporas dentro de ella hasta consumirla por completo.”
Carola Sandoval was a theater designer graduate from the University of Chile. She was the daughter of a seamstress and niece of a painter. As a child, her father made her clothes, and she created costumes for her toys and dolls.
While she was alive, she considered both Chino González and Monserrat Catalá - prominent theatrical designers - as her teachers.
Sandoval was active in street theater, working as part of the Compañía La Patriótico Interesante and Teatro Mendicantes, where she developed her interests in masks, carnival, and open-air theater. Popular culture and folklore were always among her greatest passions. She considered herself a "victim" of the latter, dancing in the Fiesta de La Tirana as Osa Blanca, Cóndor, and China Supay.
She was also a circus performer; she owned her own circus tent and took part as a designer and actress with her character Koqoshka, the Bear.
Nature was always a source of inspiration, together with Latin American folk art and indigenous culture, and so her designs and creations ran the gamut from the performing arts to Latin American muralism.
Carola Sandoval fue una diseñadora teatral formada en la Universidad de Chile. Era hija de costurero y sobrina de pintor. De pequeña su papá le confeccionaba ropa y ella le creaba vestuarios a sus juguetes y muñecos.
En vida consideró a Chino González y Monserrat Catalá -destacados diseñadores teatrales- como sus maestros.
Sandoval trabajó en el teatro de calle con la Compañía La Patriótico Interesante y con Teatro Mendicantes, donde pudo desarrollar sus intereses en la máscara, el carnaval y la calle. La cultura popular y el folclore siempre han sido unas de sus mayores pasiones, considerándose una “víctima” de este último y bailando en la Fiesta de La Tirana como Osa blanca, Cóndor y China Supay.
Trabajó también en circo; tenía una carpa y participó como diseñadora y a la vez actriz con su personaje la osa Koqoshka.
La naturaleza siempre fue fuente de inspiración, junto con el arte popular latinoamericano y la cultura de los pueblos originarios del mundo, por lo mismo sus diseños y creaciones abarcaron desde las artes escénicas hasta el muralismo latinoamericano.
