“Young Willy and his crew set sail with only one mission: to free all the oppressed peoples of every port they set anchor. So they boarded a floating theater he created and set sail at dawn.
They traveled the world aboard the theater for seven years, spreading riches, overthrowing tyrannies, and slaying kings. Young Willy taught people to draw and founded theaters and art schools. He gave his life to the sea, and the sea was kind to the theater and its crew.
Still, the sea is not to be trusted. One stormy night, the floating theater could not withstand the fierce weather and was wrecked in the middle of the ocean. Half of the crew drowned, while the other half disappeared.
Young Willy, once a faithful adventurer, now had no companions left. As he clung to some drifting planks, he was spotted by a lone fish that did not hesitate to quickly and painlessly gobble him whole.”
“El joven Willy se embarcó con un solo objetivo: liberar, junto a su tripulación, a todos los pueblos oprimidos de cada puerto que visitaran. Se subieron a un teatro flotante que él mismo había creado y zarparon de madrugada.
Durante siete años a bordo del teatro, recorrieron el mundo repartiendo riquezas, derrocando tiranías y matando reyes. El joven Willy enseñó a las personas a dibujar y fundó teatros y escuelas de arte. Entregaba su vida al mar y el mar era gentil con el teatro y sus tripulantes.
No obstante, en el mar no se puede confiar. Una noche de tormenta, el teatro flotante no aguantó la violencia del clima y fue destrozado en medio del océano. La mitad de la tripulación se ahogó, mientras que la otra desapareció.
El joven Willy, otrora fiel aventurero, ahora no tenía quien le acompañara. Aferrado a unas tablas a la deriva, fue divisado por un solitario pez, que no dudó en engullirlo rápidamente y sin dolor.”
Guillermo "Willy" Ganga was a stage designer originally trained at the University of Chile in the 1970s. In 1978 he began to participate in the iconic Compañía Teatro Itinerante. Throughout his nearly 44 year career, he designed countless stage sets, lighting and costume designs, playbills, theater and dance posters, and television sets. He also worked as an illustrator, where he discovered that he had an eye fixation: for most of the characters he drew had more than two.
In 1987 he won a public tender that would make him the Head Technician of the Chilean National Theater, a position he held for over 30 years. In addition, he also worked with independent companies, collaborating with renowned Chilean theater directors. Among his mentors were Bernardo Trumper and Mario Álvarez.
Ganga has always considered himself an art worker. In December 2022 he won the Premio de las Artes Escénicas Presidente de la República for his career as a theater designer, and the Festival Internacional Santiago a Mil 2023 honored him, recognizing him as a key figure, acknowledging his work, talent and vocation, as he embodied the work of many previously unseen workers in the theater.
Guillermo “Willy” Ganga fue un diseñador escénico que se formó en la Universidad de Chile en la década de los setenta. En 1978 comenzó a participar de la emblemática Compañía Teatro Itinerante. En sus casi 44 años de trayectoria diseñó un sinnúmero de escenografías, iluminación, vestuario, programas de mano, afiches para teatro y danza; además de ambientaciones para televisión. Además se dedicó a la ilustración, donde descubrió que tenía una fijación por los ojos: la mayoría de los personajes que dibujaba tenían más de dos.
En 1987 ganó un concurso público que lo convertiría en el Jefe Técnico del Teatro Nacional Chileno, cargo que ocupó por más de 30 años. Por otro lado, también trabajó con compañías independientes, colaborando con importantes directores teatrales chilenos. Dentro de sus maestros destacaban Bernardo Trumper y Mario Álvarez.
Ganga siempre se consideró un trabajador del arte. En diciembre 2022 fue ganador del Premio de las Artes Escénicas Presidente de la República por su trayectoria como diseñador teatral y el Festival Internacional Santiago a Mil 2023 le rinde homenaje, considerándolo una figura clave, reconociendo su trabajo, talento y vocación, ya que representó la labor de muchos trabajadores que permanecían ocultos en el Teatro.
